Bashiqa an assessment on the status of olive plantations
Bashiqa, a town in Mosul district in northern Iraq 15km from Mosul city center, was once known for its famous and high-quality pickles and olives.
However, all this changed after June 2014 when ISIS took over the area. The group destroyed the olive industry leaving the local economy in tatters. When ISIS was in control of the area, they used to export olives not to Mosul alone, but also to Syria.
Bashiqa used to produce over 600 tons of olives per year before the ISIS invasion plus, Iraqi ministry of Agriculture had a plan to expand the number of trees to 600,00 0 olive trees before 2003.

An assessment was carried out in Jad’ah J5 and J6 to gather evidence on the intentions of IDPs in J6 to relocate anywhere from J1 to J5. We employed a mixed method approach, using quantitative and qualitative data to guide our approach on the relocation process. A cross sectional survey was conducted in J6 to collect data on intentions and willingness of J6 residents to relocate to other parts of Jad’ah.
